perfect situation is the second song on make believe and the third single from the album. after beverly hills vaulted the band into a brief spot in the pop mainstream, and we are all on drugs rightfully tanked, perfect situation proved to be a radio hit, peaking at #1 on the alternate charts and #51 on the hot 100. interestingly, it got a remix when it was released to radio. the chorus melody was changed, ending in a rising woah rather than the defeated falling tone of the original. i prefer the original version, as i think it fits the melodramatic tone of the song better, but i do think the change was the right move to make the song more accessible. what i don't agree with, though, is changing all future copies of the album to have the new version. the new version is present on most cds of the album, as well as on spotify and the music video, so its entirely possible you've never heard the original - if so, check it out.

the other change they made was having some 'perfect situation' chants at the end that ruin the outro and are a cheesy and gory attempt at getting radio listeners to remember the name of the song, cause otherwise there's no chorus lyric to stick in your head - it's just oh-woahs. i'm a total sucker for oh-woahs, so i'm totally cool with that. plus, i'm afraid to think what a chorus would entail for this song - the verses are all super melodramatic. and i'm not talking 'world has turned' hyperbole here, i'm talking mid 2000s emopop melodrama. 'i can't satisfy all the needs she has and so she starts to wander / can you blame her?' oh boy. i think the song works quite well if you can look past that, though, and the lyrics manage to be resonant in spite of their occasional cheese factor. and it's certainly not the most embarrassing moment on an album with songs like 'my best friend' and 'we are all on drugs.'

the intro/solo is pretty kickass, and the melody is pretty sticky and fits the song well. the piano driving through the song could have been garish, but it fits well; i especially love the descending piano lines in the 2nd and 3rd choruses. all in all, a pretty good song and one of their better singles of the 2000s albums as well as one of the best songs on the album. it gets played live at most shows, although recently they've been shortening the intro for no conceivable reason aside from they hate their fans.
