Adapter to convert rs232 on machine to USB?
As the title says. I'd like to load programs via a thumb drive.
Goggling for adapters there are lots of them meant for PC's, cheap. Problem is they mention a driver is included. I'm talking about a CNC machine where there is no way to load a driver.
Somebody must make this device. It's probably not cheap though since it for CNC's.

USB CNC Pendant
Cat's meow!
It's the little alum / green box in the LLH corner of the link above.
You can also see it sneeking in the URH corner of this pic on my machine.

Hummm..
..Ox, I wonder if that would solve our new problem talking to our OT control? We can down load but not send to it??? No changes were made, it is a sudden and new problem and the rs 232 cable test as good and was also checked on another machine as working (not a Fanuc control).
We considered a Calmotion unit in the past (I think they are around 700 bucks,) Doug.. any thoughts on this Ox? Maybe I should start a new thread but this seems to be somewhat along the lines of this one..
Doug, they also have one you can move from machine to machine.

If you want to go cheap, you can buy a USB to serial cable. A Trendnet TU-S9 is available on ebay for less than $10. That is what I use for program upload and drip feed from a netbook at my mill.

The unit that you can walk from machine to machine is $700, the one to mount dogfast is $500. Near as I can tell - it is all the same deal, just one has been mounted in a box and the other is all loose componants.
I have used my loose one on a Fanuc 18 and an old Mits. It is now mounted perminently to the Mits.
No idea what it takes to run the USB as previously mentioned.
I know that the reason that they don't use USB's on machine toolsis that they require some amount of 'driver' installed, and apparently there is not a 100% standard for USB storage units, and so you could be set up for one type, and in a few yrs the market moves to another type and standardises on it, and there you are..
Where the camera type cards (that we use on the i series Fanucs) does not require an Operating System to it. (as I have been told) So I wonder if being able to use a USB directly via the serial cable would require a Windows front end in the control?
