One of the stated aims of the author is to relate past events to current developments, especially in relation to genetics and the so-called ‘memory wars’ that have been taking place in France since the 1970s, by looking at the career of one of the most famous French doctors of the first half of the twentieth century, Alexis Carrel. This is a book that comes highly recommended as an excellent piece of scholarship by historians Robert Paxton and Herman Lebovics (the latter writes the foreword).
